The Toyota Hilux, a car every Australian has seen countless times, is one of the most popular cars renowned for its versatility, reliability and its impressive towing capabilities. As a leader in the UTE segment, the Hilux can handle every task given.

Maximum Towing Capacity

The Toyota Hilux has a maximum barked towing capacity of 3,500kg, with a standard unbraked limit of 750kg. The factors influencing this capacity are Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM), Gross Combination Mass (GCM), and tow ball load, all of which work together to make the towing safe. While the Hilux’s kerb weight of approximately 2000kg supports substantial towing loads, exceeding rear axle weight limits or improperly distributing trailer weight can restrict its actual usability, especially when at maximum capacity. Some useful upgrades, like GVM kits, can increase the limits, but they come with trade-offs, including accelerated wear on the vehicle’s running components.

Essential Towing Gear

To tow with the Toyota Hilux, proper essential equipment is required to ensure safety and compliance. A heavy-duty tow bar and wiring harness are among the most important accessories that connect and stabilise the trailer, with a brake controller installed to manage the braking system on heavier loads. Pairing this with a weight-appropriate tow hitch enhances balance and stability, while accessories like weight distribution hitches (WDH) help redistribute tow ball loads effectively. The WDH are useful for sure, but it is important to use them cautiously, as they place additional strain on the car’s chassis and are not well- suitable for off-road conditions.

Tips for Safe Towing

Keeping it safe is always the priority, especially for Toyota Cars. The Hilux is no different, but some points are important to remember. The first and most important is proper vehicle weight distribution. It is crucial to prevent instability and excessive strain on the rear axle. Next, maintaining correct tyre pressure, both on the Hilux and the trailer, ensures optimal traction and load-bearing performance. Another important point is to regularly check on the break system of the car and the trailer, to prevent overheating and improve stopping power. Last but not least, understanding the leverage effect of tow ball mass and monitoring payload limits will help owners achieve balanced, safe and successful towing operations.

Best Hilux Models for Towing

The Toyota Hilux is made for towing, but some models are able to tow more than others. The 2023 Hilux SR5 Auto 4x4 Double Cab stands out with its 3,500kg braked towing capacity, offering a GVM of 3,050kg and a GCM of 5,850kg. Other models, like 2WD variants and Pre-Runner trims, are a little less powerful than the SR5 Auto model. That is why 4x4 variants remain the preferred choice for heavy towing needs. Always remember that all the model-specific features like engine strength and acle load capacities can enhance the towing performance.
